This Weekend At Kino Nowe Horyzonty

5 lut

Each week 'Wrocław Uncut' will be bringing you weekly previews of what's on at the cinema in English.

Movie Of The Week: Her

This week's featured English language film is Her, a romantic movie with a bizarre futuristic twist. The film's central character is Theodore Twombley, a sad case of a loner with poor social social and emotional skills.

Having been ditched by his wife Catherine, Theo finds an unexpected companion in the shape of a super intelligent new talking operating system. Voiced by Scarlett Johansson, the OS ends up being central to Theo's life, even to the extent that he starts 'dating' his smartphone.

Billed by critics as a must see movie for internet addicts, Her is also being tipped for an Oscar in the original screen play category. Curious? Read this review by Hadley Freeman in the Guardian to find out more.

English Language Films

Goltzius and the Pelican Company

Those of you looking for something completely different may fancy paying a visit to watch Goltzius and the Pelican Company, a dutch production based on the life of Hendrik Goltzius, a late 16th century Dutch printer and engraver of erotic prints. To learn more on this rather unique film, see Jordan Mintzer's review in the Hollywood reporter. You can also watch the trailer here.

Polish Films

Jack Strong

The biggest release this week as far as the locals are concerned is Jack Strong. Starring Marcin Dorociński as secret double agent Jack Strong, the film is based on the true story of a man who risked it all to inform the CIA of the Kremlin's intentions.

Foreign Language Films (without English subtitles)

La Grande Bellezza

This week's recommended foreign language film is the Italian picture La Grande Bellezza. The movie delves into the colourful life of Journalist Jep Gambardella, a man who enjoyed years of lavish parties in Rome's buzzing nightlife scene. That all changes on his 65th birthday, when Jep comes across a shocking secret from his past that sees him change his ways and build a truer, more beautiful vision of the city beyond the glitzy bashes held in swanky nightclubs. Interested? You can watch the trailer here.

Matterhorn

Any dutch speakers out there? If so, you can take advantage of the opportunity to see some cinema from the Netherlands in the shape of Matterhorn, a comedy directed by Diederik Ebbinge.

The film tells the story of Fred, a devoutly religious man who lives alone after his wife dies and son moves on to live his own life. Then from out of blue Fred comes across Theo, a homeless, mentally ill adult with a mental age of about five. Fred takes Theo in and enjoys the act if being a 'father' once again, protecting Theo from bigots and bullies along the way.
