English language films:
This week's most high profile release is Carl Rinsch's $175m flick 47 Ronin, which has finally hit the screens after spending an entire year on hold. Featuring Keanu Reeves in his familiar role as the heroin, this Samurai fantasy tale's high production costs and endless hype have seen parallels drawn between it and Kevin Costner's blockbuster Waterworld. The evidence online points to the critics being unconvinced by 47 Ronin's dialogue and plot, but the reception among movie goers has been a lot more positive. The film-makers can also take comfort in the fact that even among those that haven't lauded the film, such as the Guardian's Xan Brooks, 47 Ronin's special affects and actions scenes have still had a positive reception. Will it be up your street? Why not pay a visit to Kino Nowe Horyzonty and find out - the screening times are below.
Nymphomaniac vol. 1
Looking for something a little bit out of the ordinary? How about the first part of Lars von Trier's raunchy sex laden epic
Nymphomaniac, which features the likes of Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgard, Stacy Martin, Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater and Uma Thurman. The film's seedy content has seen it fall foul with many countries' cinema censorship bodies, but there's no such issues here in Poland - and you can see it here at Kino Nowe Horyzonty from Friday. Polish films
The highly rated
Biegnij, chlopcze, biegnij opens this weekend (sadly without English subtitles). The film is based on the best selling novel by Uri Orlev, and tells the story of an eight-year-old Jewish boy who flees from the Warsaw ghetto in 1942. For more info, see this insightful review in
The Hollywood Reporter. If you still haven't yet seen
Ida, one of last year's best Polish films, then you still have a chance as there are a few more screenings in the coming week (with English subtitles).
Foreign Films (Polish subs only)
Last but no means least, there's also the screening of Russian language film
Dolgaya schastlivaya zhizn. Screened at last year's Berlinale festival, the movie tells the tale of farmer's battle against the corrupt Russian state. For more info, click
