This Weekend At Kino Nowe Horyzonty

18 gru

Each week 'Wrocław Uncut' will be bringing you weekly previews of what's on at the cinema in English.

Due to the upcoming Christmas and New Year holiday, our latest cinema column includes info on the new releases on their way between now and the first days of 2014.

Featured Movie - The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Showing from Christmas Day

The biggest and most awaited movie of the holiday season is the second installment of Peter Jackson's Hobbit 'trilogy', named The Desolation of Smaug. Last year the acclaimed director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy was accused of dragging the comparatively tiny Hobbit book across three films for financial gain. Twelve months later however, and the critics have been a lot more positive about Jackson's second of three Hobbit films.

The Desolation of Smaug has been credited for picking up the pace and being much less of a slog compared to its predecessor, which took around 40 minutes to actually get going. Nevertheless, that could do little to please hardcore fans of the book, who may not appreciate Peter Jackson's razzmatazz approach to what is essentially a simple childrens' tale. That said, one has also has to admire the man's ability to bring Tolkien's dynamic universe onto the big screen in spectacular fashion. For more information and critical opinion, here are reviews by Peter Bradshaw and Mark Kermode.

Other English Language Screenings

Another much talked about cinema release due out this Christmas is Lee Daniels' film The Butler, which stars Forest Whitaker alongside various celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz. The film follows the life of an African American Butler, Cecil Gaines, who works in the White House for several decades. During his long time in the job, Cecil serves eight presidents, experiencing events such as the civil rights movement and the Vietnam war, each of which affect his own life, his family's, and that of American society. To learn more, here is the trailer and an insightful review by Mark Kermode.

On the 27th of December cinemagoers can also catch American comedy The Family, starring Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Live On Stage Broadcasts

Following on from Kino Nowe Horyzonty's live HD transmissions from the Metropolitan Opera, the cinema will screen a special live performances from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra on New Year's Eve. Then from January, they'll also be an opportunity to catch a live broadcast of the famous Bolshoi ballet.

Exclusive New Year's Eve Screenings and Party

Love cinema and stuck for something to do this New Year's Eve? Kino Nowe Horyzonty's proposal could be just the trick. They'll be a number of exclusive first screenings of new films including The Wolf of Wall Street, Saving Mr. Banks and 47 Ronin. If either foreign or classic cinema takes your fancy, then there are also various sets of films to suit those tastes. Each set takes in four films spanning right through the evening well into the early hours. To take a look at the programme and buy tickets, click here.

There will be healthily long interlude between films before and after the clock strikes midnight, when a DJ is set to turn the cinema's open space into an active dancefloor. You can also enjoy a generous buffet between each film including appetizers, hot and cold dishes (with vegetarian and vegan options), as well as dessert. The evening wouldn't be complete without some wine of course, and the traditional celebratory glass of champagne - all of which are included in the price (150zl).
