This Weekend At Kino Nowe Horyzonty

9 lip

Each week 'Wrocław Uncut' will be bringing you weekly previews of what's on at the cinema in English.

Movie Of The Week:

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

This week's most high profile release is Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the follow up from the 2011 Planet of the Apes reboot Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Starring Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman and Keri Russell, this sequel has been praised as a step up from its predecessor by many critics. Summer blockbusters aren't normally renowned for having much substance, but if the initial reviews are anything to go, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes certainly won't fall into that category. Set in a bleak looking San Fransisco, the film has been lauded for being more intelligent and thought provoking than your average action flick.

To get a greater insight into the film , read this review by Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter.

Other English Language Films:

Frank

Another English language film out this weekend is the much loved American comedy Frank, directed by Lenny Abrahamson. In the movie Michael Fassbender plays Frank, an eccentric pop band frontman who wears a head mask 24/7. The film is told through the eyes Jon, the band's newly recruited keyboard player, who soon releases he has jumped into the deep end by joining this most quirky of projects. Check out this review by Mark Kermode to find out more.

Foreign Language Films (Without English Subtitles):

Kertu

This week's featured foreign language release is the Estonian film Kertu. The movie was voted as the audience's favourite at this years German Film Festival, and has been received well by critics too. The film is named after its central character, Kertu, a young woman whose sheltered family upbringing has contributed to her simple character. That all changes however, when she forms a bond with an unlikely lover, Villu, the local village drunk. To learn more, you can visit the film's Facebook page here.

Supercondriaque

Last but not least, French film Supercondriaque completes the line up of new releases this weekend. A comedy centred around a mad hypochondriac, Supercondriaque has sparked debate among cinemagoers back in its native country. For more info, see this review in Variety.
